How To Get Bubble Gum Out Of Your Carpet In 3 Simple Steps

Blog

It's an all-too-familiar horror. Whether a guest or your child dropped it, the last place you want to see a piece of gum is deeply pressed into your plush living room rug. Regardless of how it wound up there, these simple steps will help you get that gum out of your carpet quickly.

Gathering Your Tools

When you find gum smeared on your carpet you need to work quickly to get it cleaned up before it works itself deeply into the fibers. The longer it sits there, the more time it has to dig itself down deeper and for the oily stains to set, which will make it harder to clean.

To work as fast as possible, it's very important to have all your materials close at hand so you can get the stain out faster. In order to get that gum out of your carpet quickly, you will need:

  • A plastic baggie
  • Ice cubes
  • A white towel
  • White cloths
  • A bowl
  • Alcohol
  • Mild dish detergent
  • A bowl
  • Carbonated water
  • Warm water
  • Ice cold water
  • A shop vac
  • A vacuum cleaner

1.  Getting Rid of the Excess Gum

Don't even try to pick up the gum while it's still gooey. You'll just make a bigger mess. Instead, take your baggie and put the ice cubes in it, and then hold it against the gum. The cold ice will harden the gum, making it easier to chip away.

Hold the baggie in place until the gum becomes stiff and easy to remove. Don't rub it or push on it because you could push the gum further down into your carpet and cause damage to the delicate fibers. Just press down firmly to freeze as much of the gum as you can.

Once the gum is firmly hardened, you can start picking the clumps away. Keep removing the chunks until you're satisfied that there are no more clumps that can be safely removed.

Take your white towel and dip it in a bowl of ice-cold water, and then wring it out so that it is only slightly damp. Press it firmly against the stain and hold it there for 10 seconds. Keep repeating this step until the towel doesn't pick up anymore gum residue or stain.

2. Removing the Stain

Pour some rubbing alcohol onto your white cloth and dab it on the stain, working from the outside edge in towards the center. Be careful not to press or rub. Rubbing will make the stain worse and will cause it to grow.

Once you've blotted and dabbed the alcohol until you've covered the entire stain, let it sit for about 20 minutes. Once the time is up, you need to pour a little bit of carbonated water over it, and then wipe it up gently with a dry cloth. At this point your stain should be gone.

If there are any traces of it left, repeat this process and leave it to sit for another 20 minutes. At this point you should be able to pour more carbonated water onto it and blot it up with your cloth, and the stain should completely disappear.

3. The Final Cleanup

Put a tiny amount of mild dish soap in your bowl with warm water and dip a white cloth into it, being careful to wring it out so it's only slightly damp. Go over the spot where the stain used to be, washing gently to avoid damaging the fibers of your carpet.

After you blot the area, empty the bowl and fill it up with plain warm water to rinse the dish soap out. Pour it directly onto the carpet and let it sit for approximately 30 minutes before sucking up the excess water with a shop vac.

Let it sit for another six hours to dry and then run over it with your regular vacuum cleaner to restore your carpet's original plush appearance and make it look as good as new. By now your carpet should look as good as it did before without any signs of bubble gum or residue.
