2-Step Guide To Removing Cat Urine Stains In Your Rug

Blog

If one of the rugs in your home is stained and has the strong stench of urine because your cat has been relieving themselves on it, you may wonder what you can do to remove the stains and the odor. If so, use the following two-step guide to getting rid of the cat urine trapped in your rug after the stains have dried.

Step 1:  Spray the Stains with Diluted Vinegar

The first step in getting rid of the dried urine stains left behind by your cat is to spray them with diluted white distilled vinegar. The vinegar serves two purposes when pretreating your rugs.

First, the acetic acid in the vinegar moistens the dried stains and begins the process of breaking up the ammonia and other chemicals in the urine. Second, the vinegar also starts neutralizing the odor.

To pretreat the stains, mix together one part each of vinegar and warm water. Then, spray the solution directly on the stains, and let it work for about an hour before proceeding to the next step.

Step 2:  Treat the Area with Hydrogen Peroxide and Baking Soda

Once you have pretreated the stains with vinegar, the next step involves breaking up the stains further and lifting the urine out of the carpet fibers. For this step, you will need baking soda and hydrogen peroxide.

The baking soda serves as an odor eliminator, while the peroxide has an effervescent action that penetrates deep into the urine. When the two ingredients combine, the bubbling is enhanced, allowing the mixture to lift the urine out of the rug.

First, sprinkle a thin layer of baking soda over the stains. Using a dry towel, rub the baking soda gently into the carpet fibers.

Second, pour the hydrogen peroxide directly onto the baking soda. Then, let it work for about 15 to 30 minutes.

Once the time is up, blot the rug with a clean white cloth. Do not use any colored material, as the dyes could run and stain your rug.

After blotting up the stain and cleaning solutions, let the area dry for a few hours. Then, vacuum the rug to remove any residual stain and solution.

Using the above guide can help you get rid of the cat urine stains in your rug, along with the strong odor they produce. However, if your rug is still stained and giving off a foul odor, contact a rug cleaning service to discuss your options for having it professionally cleaned.
